Cleveland Browns coach Eric Mangini has released wide receiver Braylon Edwards off on his former team. Mangini sent Edwards, a former first-round pick whose troubles have matched his immense talent to the New York Jets on Wednesday for wide receiver Chansi Stuckey, linebacker Jason Trusnik and undisclosed draft choices.
Braylon Edwards has 10 receptions for 139 yards but was held to no catches for the first time in his career in the winless Browns’ 23-20 overtime loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. His best season came in 2007, when he had 80 catches for 1,289 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Vancouver Canucks General Manager Mike Gillis today announced that the team has signed free agent centre Mats Sundin. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are very excited to have Mats join the Vancouver Canucks,” said Mike Gillis, Vancouver Canucks General Manager. “Playing previously in two Canadian markets and consistently being among team and League leaders in scoring, Mats has proven that he can excel under pressure. He adds a wealth of experience, leadership and skill to the Canucks.”
“I am truly excited to be joining the Canucks,” said Sundin. “Once I made the decision to return to play a few weeks ago, the Vancouver opportunity was simply the best overall fit. I want to thank Mike Gillis and the entire Canucks organization for their professionalism throughout this entire process.”
Sean very has been punished indefinitely by commissioner Gary Bettman for using a crude term about his former girlfriends now dating other hockey players. Bettman acted immedietly to keep Avery out of the Dallas Stars’ game against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Avery’s inflammatory line came following a morning skate in Calgary, Alberta.
“I’m really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada,” he said. “I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my (former girlfriends). I don’t know what that’s about, but enjoy the game tonight.” He then walked out of the locker room.
Avery’s ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert of the television show “24″ is dating Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf; she had been romantically linked to Mike Komisarek of the Montreal Canadiens.

After acquiring a potential closer in Florida’s Kevin Gregg on Thursday morning, it was announced that the Cubs would not try to re-sign Kerry Wood, who will be able to accept free-agent offers from other clubs on Friday.
Wood, the 1998 NL Rookie of the Year who saved 34 games this year, had been the longest-tenured player on the Cubs. General manager Jim Hendry said Kerry Wood was deserving of a three- or four-year deal and the Cubs are not prepared to offer him one.
The Chicago Cubs acquired reliever Kevin Gregg in a trade with the Florida Marlins on Thursday, and in addition to the right-handed Gregg, who was the Marlins’ closer until the final month last season, Chicago also has a talented set-up man in Carlos Marmol, who could close. Unlikely that this could ever change the Cub’s World Series betting odds.
The Denver Nuggets traded All-Star guard Allen Iverson to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess. Detroit Pistons center Cheick Samb also will go to Denver to make the salaries match in the trade. Iverson was traded to Denver in December 2006 but was not able to help Carmelo Anthony lift the Nuggets out of the first round of the playoffs in his two seasons there.
The trade gives the Pistons salary-cap flexibility at the end of the season. Iverson’s contract, which pays him $21.9 million this season, expires in July. Billups is owed $36.3 million over the next three seasons and has an additional $14.2 million team option for 2011-12. McDyess will make $6.8 million each of the next two seasons.
The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired slugging outfielder Adam Dunn from the Cincinnati Reds yesterday for a minor-league pitcher and two players to be named later. Dunn, 28, was batting .233 this season for the Reds with 32 homers, tied for tops in the majors.
The Brett Favre years in Green Bay are now officially over. His legendary career is not. The month-long drama has now come to an end, with the Packers agreeing to trade their future Hall-of-Fame quarterback to the New York Jets, as it was first reported Wednesday night.
“We’re going to take this one year at a time,” Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said on a conference call early Thursday morning. “We’re excited to have Brett on the team this year.”
Favre, who announced his NFL playing career was over in March, is expected to be introduced at a 6 p.m. news conference at Cleveland Browns Stadium before the Jets play their first exhibition game.
Slugger Manny Ramirez’s tumultuous relationship with the Boston Red Sox is finally over.
Ramirez has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox will pay the remaining $7 million of Ramirez’s contract owed for this season. Ramirez, the MVP of the 2004 World Series, remains one of baseball’s best hitters and has enjoyed lots of career-defining moments with the franchise. But his relationship with the Red Sox went sour again recently, prompting the All-Star outfielder to agree to the deal.
Outfielder Jason Bay is going to Boston and the Pittsburgh Pirates get four minor leaguers as part of the three-way deal. Third baseman Andy LaRoche and right-handed pitcher Bryan Morris will go to the Pirates from the Dodgers. Outfielder Brandon Moss and right-handed pitcher will leave the Red Sox organization for Pittsburgh.
