Up for the honor this year are the Calgary Flames’ Dion Phaneuf, Nicklas Lidstrom of the Detroit red Wings and Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins. Nicklas Lidstrom has won the Norris Trophy five of the last six seasons, a tie with the former Bruin Ray Bourque. This is his ninth nomination.

The Calder Memorial Trophy is an annual award given “to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the National Hockey League.” The prestigious award has been given 70 times since its beginnings in 1937.

This year’s nominees are Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitols. Kane was taken first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks at last summer’s NHL draft and led all freshmen with 21 goals and 72 points in 82 games this season. Toews, who played with Kane on Chicago’s top line for most of the season, collected 54 points, despite having a shorter season (64 games) due to a knee injury. Backstrom finished second to Kane in scoring (69 points) and helped lead the Capitals into the playoffs.

Montreal Advances - Carey Price’s 2nd Shutout Against the Bruins

Posted in NHL Hockey  by Sportsbook Bonus on April 22nd, 2008

Carey Price

20-year old Rookie goaltender Carey Price put two hard to swallow losses behind him to save the Montreal Canadiens‘ playoff run and destroy the Boston Bruins’ hopes of an unlikely comeback. Price stopped 25 shots, including 11 in the opening period. Price had allowed a combined 10 goals in two losses after he got his first playoff shutout in a 1-0 victory in Game 4.

Price posted his second shutout and Andrei Kostitsyn scored twice to lead Montreal to a 5-0 victory over Boston last night in the deciding game of their best-of-seven Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. The Canadiens took control of the game in the second period, outshooting the Bruins 17-6 while building a three-goal lead by Mark Streit halfway through the period and Kostitsyn’s second goal of the series at 15:13.

Montreal, the East’s top seed, will face either the New York Rangers or Philadelphia in an East semifinal series.

He and Hall of Famer Patrick Roy are the only goaltenders in NHL history to reach the 500-win mark, and Brodeur completed the season with 96 career shutouts, seven short of all-time leader Terry Sawchuk. Brodeur also extended his NHL records by logging a third consecutive and seventh career 40-win season as well as his 10th consecutive campaign with 70-or-more games played.

Dominik Hasek Benched, Chris Osgood’s Time to Shine

Posted in NHL Hockey  by Sportsbook Bonus on April 18th, 2008

Dominek Hacek
The Detroit Red Wings were hoping to stay with Dominik Hasek when the playoffs began after rotating the goalie with Chris Osgood in the regular season. Hasek was so shaky in a series-evening loss that coach Mike Babcock was forced to make a move.

“This is Plan B,” Babcock said yesterday. “But Plan B is Chris Osgood and I think he won 29 games and had the best goals-against average in the NHL.”

Hasek was benched after giving up three goals on 14 shots in Wednesday’s 3-2 loss at Nashville. Hasek is the oldest active goalie in the NHL at 43, and the second oldest active player in the league after Red Wings teammate Chris Chelios, who is 46.

Chris Chelios Sets Record For Most Playoff Appearances

Posted in NHL Hockey  by Sportsbook Bonus on April 16th, 2008

Chris Chelios

Chris Chelios of the Detroit Red Wings made his 248th post-season appearance on Saturday afternoon, finally overtaking the NHL record held by Montreal Canadians goaltender Patrick Roy. He skated 17 shifts as Detroit prevailed 4-2 over the Nashville Predators for a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven Western Conference quarter-final.

Chelios draws nearer every year to another NHL record - that of the oldest player in NHL history. At 46 years of age, Chelios has to play for another 7 years to take the long-standing record held by Hall of Fame forward Gordie Howe, who played at age 52 for the Hartford Whalers in 1979-80.
