Kobe Bryant Named MVP

Posted in NBA Basketball  by Sportsbook Bonus on May 5th, 2008

kobe bryant

Kobe Bryant has been selected the NBA’s most valuable player for the first time in his 12-year career, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Bryant has won three championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and is considered the league’s best talent. But he had never come close to winning an MVP before this season.
Kobe averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists in the regular season. Also, he led the Lakers to a 57-25 record and the top seed in the Western Conference.

Bryant, second in the NBA in scoring behind LeBron James, will be the first Lakers player to win the MVP award since Shaquille O’Neal in 2000. Other previous Lakers to win the award were Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, who each won it three times.

NHL Playoff Update

Posted in NHL Hockey  by Sportsbook Bonus on May 5th, 2008

The Dallas Stars will open the NHL Western Conference final in Detroit against the Red Wings this Thursday.

A power play goal at 9:03 of the fourth overtime period brought the Dallas Stars a well fought 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks in Game 6 of their NHL Western Conference semifinal. The Red Wings, who posted an NHL-best 115 points in the regular season, swept the Colorado Avalanche in four games in the other conference semifinal.

In the Eastern final, the Flyers will meet the Pittsburgh Penguins, which begins on Friday in Pittsburgh. Marian Hossa scored the winning goal at 7:10 of overtime Sunday as the Penguins as they squeaked out a 3-2 win, eliminating the New York Rangers in five games in the semifinal.
Pittsburgh led 2-0 after two periods but the Rangers fought back as Lauri Korpikoski and Nigel Dawes scored 82 seconds apart early in the third, forcing an overtime period.

Tragedy At the Kentucky Derby

Posted in Horse Racing, Soccer, Tennis  by Sportsbook Bonus on May 4th, 2008

Big Brown made history to win the 134th Kentucky Derby on Saturday, but the race finished under a dark cloud as runner-up Eight Belles broke down on the track. Eight Belles, trained by Larry Jones and ridden by 20-year-old Gabriel Saez, was trying to become just the fourth filly to win the Derby. Minutes after the race the filly fell to the ground and Saez jumped off. She was found to have broken both front ankles and was humanely destroyed on the track. With the memory of Barbaro still fresh, Eight Belles’ devastating breakdown Saturday put increasing focus on a sport already suffering a decline in popularity.
Her death has raised major issues about the industry, including whether fillies should be allowed to run with males.
In 2006, Derby winner Barbaro shattered his fight rear leg at the start of the Preakness, as thousands of people watched in horror. Barbaro was euthanized eight months later.

Dallas Mavericks Fire Avery Johnson

Posted in NBA Basketball  by Sportsbook Bonus on May 2nd, 2008

The decision is the first but probably not the last of what’s likely to a major shakeup for the franchise in the off season. The league’s highest payroll produced a second straight first-round knockout from the playoffs. Avery Johnson leaves Wednesday with an decent resume after three-plus seasons, but Mavericks owner Mark Cuban could only see the bottom line of being 3-12 in the playoffs since blowing a 2-0 lead in the 2006 NBA finals.
